We used rectangular concrete pavers to build a winding path through the side yard, with a small circle of them under the birdbath. It breaks up the lawn, keeps shoes dry when the grass is wet, and feels nicer underfoot than plain gravel. The gaps filled with fine stone let rain soak in, and edging them with steel strips keeps everything tidy without looking too rigid.
